About Indianapolis 500

The Indianapolis 500, also known as Indy 500, is a popular automobile race held in the United States of America annually at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the Memorial Day weekend. Built in 1909, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted a number of small events before deciding of holding one major one instead. A 500 mile race track was designed using 3.2 million bricks. This race was initially known as the 'International 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race.' The main promoter of these races was Carl G. Fisher, a pioneer of real estate and auto racing. The first winner was an American named Ray Harroun driving a Marmon 'Wasp' on May 30, 1911. The Indianapolis 500 is one of the oldest automobile races in the world and it was established only a few years after the invention of cars. The rich prize money entices plenty of drivers to participate. Traditionally, there is a field of 33 cars participating in this race. They begin the race three cars in a row. There is also a post-race tradition for the winner to drink a bottle of milk. A sculpture of the face of the winner is inserted on the Borg-Warner Trophy along with his name, victory date and his average speed. Since 1952, the Indianapolis 500 races have been broadcasted live over radio on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network and on television in 1949 and 1950. These races had not been broadcasted again until ABC Sports was permitted to broadcast the race via tape delay in 1965. Since, the year 1986 there has been live flag-to-flag of this event. In May 2006, the race celebrated its 90th running and 61st consecutive year of uninterrupted occurrence.
