About Ivory

The Ivory brand of products is owned by the multinational conglomerate Procter and Gamble (P&G). Ivory products include the Classic Ivory bar soap, Ivory body wash, Ivory liquid hand cleanser, and the Ivory Snow washing powder and liquid. The first Ivory product was the Ivory white bar soap, launched in October 1879. Initially, the soap, made by James N. Gamble and his associates, was to be called the P&G White soap, however Harley Procter felt that the newly formulated soap should have a better and a more individual name. The name Ivory was selected when Harley Procter heard the word being read out from a psalm by a priest, in the church he went to. The Ivory soap's most known feature is that it floats in water, unlike other soaps. However, this feature was actually incorporated accidentally in the soap, when a worker forgot to shut down the soap-making machine, and the batch of soaps turned out to be puffier than was required. But these batches were still sold since there was nothing wrong with the soap itself. Soon after, the company started getting more orders specifically for the soaps that floated. Today, the bar soap is artificially injected with a little air to make it float. The next Ivory product to be introduced by P&G was the Ivory liquid dish detergent, launched in 1957. Today, this has been replaced with the milder Ultra Ivory dish liquid. In 1989, Ivory Snow, a laundry detergent was launched. It is now available both as a powder and a liquid detergent.
