About Jade

Jade is an ornamental stone made up of either of two minerals: jadeite or nephrite. It is generally green in color, however it may also be orange, white, black, yellow, gray, and violet. It has a greasy luster and is used in jewelry, carvings, accessories, and so on. Both nephrite and jadeite are hard, dense, and closely grained. However, nephrite is generally mid and dark green to gray-green, although it may also be white, yellowish, and reddish. Jadeite may also be green, but is also available in a more variety of colors, such as white, pink, red, brown, and violet. It is tougher and rarer than nephrite, and has been said to be found in only 12 places across the world. Jade has been known by man since prehistoric times, but was earlier used more in weaponry, such as hammerheads and knives, because of its toughness, rather than in jewelry. New Zealand's aborigines carved weapons and cult instruments largely from jade, a tradition that continues today. Jade had the same standing as gold and diamonds in ancient China, and was called the 'royal gem'. In China, it was traditionally used in the finest carvings and symbolized wisdom and courage. Even in the Mayan and Aztec cultures, jade was valued more highly than gold. Today, Myanmar (Burma), Canada, and Hong Kong are some of the best sources for jade and jade art.
