About John Deere

John Deere is the founder the American agricultural and construction equipment manufacturing major, Deere & Company. He started the company in 1837, but it only took on the name of Deer & Company, in 1868. John Deere, as the company is also known as, is one of the oldest industrial companies, in the United States. The company started as a one-man blacksmith shop, however slowly grew into a corporation that today does business around the world. John Deere was born in Rutland, Vermont, February 7, 1804. He spent his boyhood and young adulthood in Middlebury, Vermont, where he received a common school education and served a four-year apprenticeship learning the blacksmith's trade. In 1825, he began his career as a journeyman blacksmith. However, business conditions in Vermont became depressed in the mid-1830s, and the future looked gloomy. Deere went to Illinois and started work as a blacksmith there. He realized that the farmer community there needed well-made plows and soon started manufacturing steel plows, which sold very well. In 1868, Deere's business was incorporated under the name Deere & Company. The following year John Deere's son, Charles, who was later to succeed him as president, was elected vice president and treasurer. Over the years, the company acquired several farm equipment companies and invested in research and development. Despite the depression that gripped the US in the 1930s, the company achieved $100 million in gross sales. By 1982, manufacturing and marketing operations had been established worldwide. Today, John Deere has four manufacturing divisions: agricultural equipment, construction and forestry equipment, commercial and consumer and equipment, and power systems.
