About Two Person Kayaks

A two person kayak is a small covered boat with two seats, also called cockpits, depressed into the body of the boat, to accommodate the two human boaters sitting facing in the same direction one behind the other. The kayak is propelled using double paddled oars. This mode of transport, ideal for rough and choppy rapids, was invented by Eskimos in the sub-Arctic regions spanning North America and Greenland. The first made, Kayaks were constructed by stretching animal skins over a wooden framework and stitching the edges together, to create a semblance of water proofing. Nowadays, kayaks are made of reinforced plastic or fabric molded over an aluminum, fiberglass, carbon fiber, or Kevlar frame. Two person kayaks are often preferred to solo kayaks as it enables companionship and team work, and also allows the two boaters to talk to each other eliminating boredom. Additionally, a novice kayaker can pair himself/herself with an expert during the training period. The person who sits in the rear seat is the one who actually steers the kayak, this person preferably being the heavier of the two. Depending on where and for what purpose the kayak is used, kayaks are classified as racing kayaks, surf kayaks, river kayaks, or sea kayaks. Some kayaks are foldable, having a collapsible frame under a water-resistant fabric. Some kayaks called 'sit-on-top' kayaks have the seat higher than the body of the kayak, as compared to other kayaks, elevating the center of gravity, resulting in these kayaks being broader. Water which may enter the cockpit can drain out through tubes connecting the cockpit with the bottom of the boat. Some kayaks, made of neoprene, polyurethane, or PVC can be inflated before use. Instead of using paddles, certain kayaks can be driven by using foot pedals connected to underwater flippers, freeing the hands of the kayakers.
