About Great White Shark

Great White shark... The first thing that this name brings to mind is the 1975 classic movie, 'JAWS'. With 3,000 razor-sharp serrated teeth and a body that grows to an average of 12-16 feet in length, this torpedo-shaped creature is a true predator of the oceans. The scientific name of the huge fish is Carcharodon carcharias; it is the only survivor of the Carcharodon genus. White shark, White pointer, White death, Blue pointer, Tommy shark are all different names for the same sea predator '? the Great White shark. Ranging in color from grey to blue-grey, with a white belly that helps camouflage them in dark waters, they have a conical blunt snout and five large gill-slits. The females are larger than the males, while the pups are around 5 feet at birth. The Guinness Book of World Records lists two Great Whites as the largest ever caught: one 36 feet (11m), and the other 37 feet (11.3m) in length. The Great White's diet comprises fish, rays, and other sharks, sea lions and seals, beluga whales, otters and sea turtles. They are legendary for their acute sense of smell; their nostrils can smell one drop of blood in 25 gallons of water. The nostrils are used only for smelling, while the gills are used for breathing. Ampullae of Lorenzini are a series of jelly-filled canals in the shark's head that facilitate the sensing of minute electrical discharges and help in detecting magnetic fields. These sharks are mainly solitary animals; sometimes they are found in pairs. Their retractable teeth rotate on their own axis. These sharks are ovoviviparous; the eggs hatch within the female's uterus and the pups feed on unfertilized eggs and smaller siblings. After birth, there is no maternal care-giving, and the young ones swim away from the mother. Since 1970, there has been a great decline in the number of these sharks, to such an extent that they are now considered an endangered species.
