About Neil Diamond

Born on January 24, 1941, Neil Leslie Diamond was brought-up in Brooklyn. He went to Abraham Lincoln High School, the same school that Barbra Streisand attended and even sang with her in the school choir. He sharpened his guitar playing skills after he received one as a gift when he was 16 years old. Neil went to New York University on a fencing scholarship to be a Pre-Med student but left it due to his dislike for Organic Chemistry. He married school teacher Jaye Posner in 1963 whom he later divorced in 1969. He had two children with her. He started of as a writer in the Brill Building and received recognition for songs 'I'm a Believer' and 'A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You' for the Monkees band. He released a string of singles such as 'Kentucky Woman', 'Cherry, Cherry' and 'Solitary Man' under Bang! Records; produced by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. After moving to Los Angeles, California in 1970, he recorded songs like 'Cracklin' Rosie', 'Sweet Caroline' and 'Song Sung Blue' under Uni Records. Diamond married Marcia Murphey with whom he had two sons. In 1973, he recorded the soundtrack for the film Jonathan Livingston Seagull, a venture whose earnings totaled more than that of the movie. In 1978, he recorded a duet song with Barbra Streisand 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers' that became a smash hit. Diamond won the first ever Worst Actor Award in the Razzie Awards for his role in The Jazz Singer (1980). His marriage with Marcia Murphey ended in a divorce in which he was forced to pay $ 15 million as settlement.
