This fun-filled extreme sport is sure to leave a mark on players. Paintball is a simulated was game in which players compete to eliminate opponents using a paintball marker loaded with water-soluble paintballs. When an enemy is marked with a splat, they are out of the game. The games can take place either indoors or outdoors with a series of objectives such as capture the flag, eliminating all opponents or defense of a particular zone. Games may last from seconds long up to several days long depending on the scenario of play. Players are required to wear a protective paintball mask as the shots are fired at a high velocity that is potentially extremely dangerous for the eyes. Players may opt to wear other protective clothing, as the shots are capable of making large welts on the skin, especially when fired at close range. Some scenarios are set up as massive war games on a paintball lot in which sophisticated items such as a paintball tank are used to control territory. Speedball is a popular version of the game that is preferred by professionals, which is played on relatively small fields of play that are covered with inflatable bunkers with games of up to five minutes in length. Referees oversee the games in order to enforce the rules and ensure that players are safe at all times. Since the sport was first played in the early 1980s in the woods, a large number of commercial paintball venues have opened. These courses have varied setups that cater to different player’s preferences including woods fields, urban settings and smaller speedball areas.
