About Pom Poms

Pompoms or Pompons are one of the most recognized prop symbols of Cheerleading. Pompoms are fluffy decorative balls, which come in different sizes, colors, and varieties, and are made from a wide range of materials which include fabric, plastic, paper, and occasionally feathers. Pompoms are strings of materials bound together to a centered handle to form a sort of fluffy ball. Though mainly used by cheerleaders for cheering, pompoms are also used for sewing or for craft projects. They are generally made of yarn. For the purpose of cheerleading, pompoms are typically made from strings of plastic, paper, metallic shiny strings, and now also in LED flash lights in a variety of colors and sizes. Pompoms are used by cheerleaders for a variety of reasons which include accentuating movements, attracting the attention of a crowd, adding an element of sparkle to a cheer and distracting the opposing team. They are available in a variety of styles, shapes, colors, sizes and color combinations. Variation in handles has recently emerged as one of the key factors, while buying pompoms. Commonly, pompoms are used in pairs, with one held in each hand by a cheerleader. Pompoms are also used in play schools for enjoyment in learning as children take fancy to things that shine, and tend to pay more attention to these objects. In major events, cheerleading squads are judged on the artistic use, catches and number of tosses of the pompom. Pompoms were first used in 1930s by cheerleaders who made them out of crepe paper. It was not unusual for the strands to fall out while cheering and was hard to take care of. In a few regions of North America, pompom cheerleading is considered a separate sport in itself..
