About Sugar Glider Cage

Sugar Gliders, also known as Flying Sugar, are marsupials native to northern and eastern Australia, Indonesia, New Guinea and Bismarck Archipelago. They are also known as Short-Headed Flying Phalanger and the Lesser Flying Phalanger. Sugar Gliders are nocturnal tree dwelling creatures who often live in groups of 20 to 40. They are little, soft grey animals that have a black stripe running down their backs and a gliding membrane used much like flying squirrels. Around 16 to 20 cm in length and weighing somewhere around 90 and 150 grams, the tail of a glider is as long as its. The gliders use their tail for balancing and steering. The fur is a smooth pearl grey, with cream and black patches at the base of its pink ear. They have odd qualities like forked genitalia in both males and females and also have opposable toes and fingers. Gliders make a wide range of sounds like chirping, chattering, crabbing, and barking. The twin skin membranes known as patagium are noticeable features of its anatomy which extend from the first toe of the hind foot to the fifth finger of the forelimb. These membranes help gliders glide between trees, and also act as an efficient way to get to food resources. Gliders are extremely social animals; they require lot of attention and hate to be left alone. Because of their social nature, pet gliders should be kept in small groups or pairs. If a sugar glider becomes lonely it will become depressed and eventually die. Gliders are not the kind of pets one could put behind bars or in cages, to be fed and forgotten about; the owner needs to devote time and attention to its glider. This could include finger wrestling, running around in a glider proofed room and riding it on the owner's shoulder or hair. Sugar Gliders have a life span of 14-15 years. Female gliders have a pouch in which her young ones specially twins eat and develop for about 70 days. These animals are omnivorous and lick sweet sap from eucalyptus and sweet gum from the acacia. Acquiring sugar gliders as pets in Australia is illegal and requires a license to sell. They are legally exported to America. Sugar Gliders are popular as pets because of their lively, sweet and inquisitive nature. They form a very good bond with their human companions and are extremely loving and intelligent.
