Bavarian Motor Works or BMW, have been in service for more than 80 years now. BMW launched its first motor bike in 1923, called R32. They used aluminum alloy cylinders, a 486 cc engine, with a top speed of 69 mph (100 km/h), and a recirculating wet-sump oiling system instead of the widely used loss oil system (which was in use till up until 1969). The R32 also introduced the 'boxer' engine, an engine that was more compact and offered greater stability, balance and control while riding the motorcycle. With the entry of 'boxer' engines, BMW revolutionized motorcycle design and manufacture. Initially established to manufacturer aero plane engines, BMW faced issued after the passing of Treaty of Versailles. Then detoured to design and manufacture state of the art advanced motorcycles The BMW currently has three lines of motorcycles namely the F series, R series and the K series. The F series motorcycles are built with the 650 cc, four stroke, and a single piston engine. The recent inclusions in the F series include the F800GS and F800ST both use an 800cc parallel twin engine. The R series motorcycles are built with two piston, horizontally opposed flat-twin engine. Visually distinctive, these bikes initially had air-cooled heads but are presently manufactured with oil-cooled heads. Most American law enforcement agencies use the R series. The K series motorcycles are built with liquid cooled, inline engines with three to four cylinders. The first K series bike, the K 100 was launched in 1983 followed by K100RS and the K100RT. The K series engine was given a 1700 cc boost in 1998. BMW motorcycles are named according to their engine type, approximate weight volume and style information. For example the R1150RT is actually R series bike, with an 1150 cc engine and RT styling. BMW have been manufacturing motorcycles for more than 80 years. They've been nearly bankrupt and have had their factory destroyed during war. Today, they are one of the most respected brands in motorcycles.
