About Harley Davidson

The Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company is perhaps best known for its big bikes that can weigh as much as 1,000 pounds. One of the main reasons that these bikes are so big is to accommodate their big, powerful engines. The Softail was first introduced in 1984 and quickly gained a reputation as a great cruiser motorcycle. The motorcycles in this line typically weigh around 650 pounds and are Harley-Davidson's best-selling bikes. The introduction of the Softail line coincided with the release of Harley-Davidson's latest engine innovation, namely the Evolution. The Evolution is a powerful V-twin engine that, when introduced, had a displacement of 80 cubic inches (1340 cc). The Softail is so named because its rear shock absorbers are placed along the axis of the motorcycle and concealed by its transmission, thereby giving the illusion that it is a hardtail (a bike with no rear suspension). The Softail was a big hit with consumers because it provided a smoother ride. Even so, Harley-Davidson decided to pay tribute to one of its early designs. In 1997, the company released the Heritage Softail, which was designed to resemble a 1948 Harley called the Panhead--right down to the chrome. The Heritage Softail model gave birth to the Fat Boy, which was released in 1990. The Fat Boy is acclaimed for being one of the biggest cruisers on the market. The Fat Boy is also known for its appearance in the Terminator 2 movie.
