About Eric Clapton

Eric Patrick Clapton, nicknamed 'Slowhand', is one of the most respected guitarists today. Born in Ripley, Surrey, England on March 30, 1945, he grew up with his grandparents, believing them to be his parents and his mother, his sister. His father was a Canadian soldier. Clapton discovered this secret when he was nine-years-old, a major turning point in his life. He attended the Hollyfield School in Surbiton and later studied the art of stained-glass at Kingston Art School. Clapton got his first acoustic guitar at the age of 13 but didn't take to it, initially. 'The Roosters' was the first band he joined at the age of 17; he then also played with Casey Jones and the Engineers. Clapton also joined 'The Yardbirds' around the same time, doing blues influenced rock n' roll. In 1965, he joined 'John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers', establishing himself as a great blues guitarist. He then formed 'Cream' along with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. The band's three-year stint gained immense commercial success and sold over 15 million records. 'Blind Faith', the next band, lasted only a year, during 1969. Clapton then made appearances with a number of other bands including The Beatles. 'Derek and The Dominos' was the cause of 'Delany and Bonnie and Friends', a band that Clapton did the rhythm section for. The song 'Layla' was released during this time. Clapton also went on to play with other notable musicians like Robbie Robertson and Bob Dylan. He has also performed with Roger Waters and Phil Collins. In 1991, he recorded 'Tears in Heaven' for his son Conor, who tragically passed away at the age of four. He was awarded a Grammy for the song. Clapton has a huge collection of guitars, many of which he has donated to charity. His most famous one is his signature Fender Stratocaster. He still continues to play to sell-out crowds and collaborates with prominent musicians such as Santana and B.B. King.
