Music Alternative

The term 'alternative music' was coined in the 1980s as a catch-all for any music that did not fit into the mainstream genres, namely pop, rock, country, jazz and R&B. Examples of alternative music can be found in punk and New Wave, and as a whole, the genre owes its existence to the underground bands that experimented with various forms of rock music through the 1970s.Today, alternative is one of the most widely played forms of music in the world. It encompasses many sub-genres, including indie rock, punk and grunge. What makes this music alternative? All are characterized by their independence from commercial pop rock. When an artist is referred to as 'indie,' it means they are signed to an independent rather than major label, often allowing more creative freedom. Even as increasing numbers of mainstream artists such as 50 Cent are on independent labels, the 'indie' tag most often means that an artist is making music outside the influence of pop culture.The irony of alternative's popularity lies in the fact that many artists who started out on the musical fringe soon became absorbed into the mainstream. This phenomenon gave rise to a backlash by hardcore alternative gothic punk and college rock bands that eschew any form of commercial success. Many alternative bands, however, have successfully made the transition and now enjoy a large mainstream following. Green Day, R.E.M. and the Gin Blossoms are just a few examples.For the alternative music fan, it has never been easier to find a variety of high-quality alternative rock. Specialty music stores are dependable sources. However, larger chain stores and internet venues are getting in on the act.
