About Music Record

We tend to think of the record as a modern invention, but in reality, early designs and prototypes existed as far back as the early 19th century. It wasn't until Thomas Edison perfected the idea that we had a device able to both record and play back sound. The rest, as they say, is history. The first album sold was a recording of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. Here, separate records were packaged together so the listener could hear the complete ballet score, rather than two or four-minute increments, as were previously available. Early music records featured classical artists, opera singers, and jazz bands.Despite a temporary dip in sales when radios become common household fixtures, the idea of owning a music record and being able to play it at any time fascinated early 20th century America. When jazz segued into big band and bluegrass gave rise to early rock and roll, records exploded. The roles of records and radio were reversed--radio was used to sell records, instead of records acting as a replacement for radio.Today, audiophiles insist the pure sound quality of a music record is superior to cassettes, 8 tracks, and even CDs. Collector's records (like the Beatles' first album) can fetch hundreds or thousands of dollars, although these are rarely listened to for fear of damaging them. Modern artists are increasingly returning to vinyl records, too; more college dorm rooms are sporting turntables and vinyl copies of albums from Nirvana, Beck, and the Beastie Boys. EP and LPs are the most common distinctions, indicating the length of play (extended playing and long playing, respectively). Nearly all records produced today follow the 12' LP or Maxi Single format. However, vintage records are often found in both 12' 33⅓ RPM LP format or 7' 45 RPM EP format. All record formats can be played on traditional record players.
