About Ray Charles

Ray Charles once said 'As long as I can remember, music has always been something extraordinary in my life. It's always been something that completely captured my attention - from the time I was three. My first love was the music.' Born in Albany, Georgia to poor sharecropper parents on September 23, 1930, Ray Charles Robinson was a pioneer in soul music. Ray Charles went blind after he witnessed his younger brother drown in a tub. Before the age of sixteen he began showing a keen interest in music, especially in the genre of jazz and the blues. He soon learned to play various musical instruments and also learned to read music in Braille. After completing his schooling, Ray played for various bands in Florida. He later moved to Seattle, where he recorded his first hit single in 1949, 'Confession Blues' followed by his second big knock out track in 1952, 'Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand'. After this Charles belted out hit after hit, including tracks such as 'It Should Have Been Me', 'Mess Around', 'This Little Girl of Mine', 'Lonely Avenue', 'Hallelujah I Love Her So', and 'Drown in My Own Tears'. But it was his gospel number 'I Got a Woman' that kick-started his career in 1955. Mainstream success paved the way for Ray after his 'The Night Time (Is the Right Time)' album and his signature track 'What'd I Say' (1959). He soon began sinking his fingers into pop music with tracks such as 'Unchain My Heart' and 'You Are My Sunshine', his other pop inspired singles 'Georgia on My Mind' and 'Hit the Road, Jack' peaked at the top position on the Billboard pop charts. By 1962, Ray was further pushed into popularization with his tracks 'I Can't Stop Loving You' and 'You Don't Know Me' from his landmark album 'Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music' Ray Charles passed away on June 10, 2004. His final album, 'Genius Loves Company' was released two months after his demise. This album featured duets with Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, Gladys Knight, Elton John, Norah Jones, and James Taylor. The album won 8 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Gospel Performance, and Best Pop Collaboration. Ray Charles's version of 'Georgia on My Mind' was proclaimed the official song of the state of Georgia.
