About Used Vinyl Record

In this day and age, the used vinyl record is generally the musical medium of audiophiles and old fogies. Most youngsters today would barely know what a record is, let alone how to use one. However, there is one arena where used vinyl records have remained not only hip and happening, but highly relevant to today's music. To the hip hop and electronica dj, used vinyl records are critical to their musical craft. Although, records have become increasingly obsolete over the last twenty years, it is also in this period that they became part of popular music itself. Turntables, or record players, don't just allow one to play music, but to manipulate and interact with it, and this is the basic concept upon which dj-ing is built. DJs use turntables to meld two tracks together (eliminating the switch-over period), remix music, and 'scratch'. Without the turntable itself, this form of musical expression could not exist, and much of the last decade's musical landscape would look very different indeed. DJs not only use outdated technology in their cutting edge musical forms, but outdated music itself. DJs can be seen in record stores across the country, searching for a used vinyl record to employ as a sample or in a remix. Twelve-inch formats are what DJs use, and this is in large part why the 12-inch format is the predominant one currently being produced. However, technology has caught onto this popular musical trend and is inventing digital music formats to accommodate it. Some professional CD players now allow DJs to manipulate the tracks, slowing them down, speeding them up, beginning them in the middle, and yes, even letting them scratch. A Japanese company, ELP, has actually invented a machine that uses lasers (instead of a needle) to read vinyl records, thereby eliminating interference from dust and scratches.
