About Waylon Jennings

Born on June 15, 1937, Waylon Jennings was a respected and influential American country music singer and guitarist. Born in Littlefield, Texas, Jennings taught himself to play the guitar when he was eight, and brought together his first band two years later. Waylon worked as a DJ throughout his teen years, and then dropped out of school to pursue a career in music. After several years of inactivity, Jennings began performing in Phoenix, Arizona. During this time, Jennings did two to three shows a night, and in some cases even six times a week. He developed a unique sound and a devoted following which led him to sign a contract with Herb Albert's A&M records. With a few hit singles including 'Four Strong Winds', Waylon was recommended to sign with RCA Victor who asked him to play in Nashville, Tennessee in 1965. Waylon was not used to the typical post-production enhancing of recordings with string arrangements and other overdubs. He believed in the 'artistic freedom' that the country music industry had to offer in the 1960's. In 1972, a business manager from New York named Neil Reshen, agreed to manage both Waylon and one of his old friends Nelson Reshen. This was the beginning of the Outlaw Country. Waylon released several albums, both solo and in collaboration with Nelson that marked the success of the Outlaw Country movement. By the early 1800's, Jennings was completely addicted to cocaine which resulted in his bankruptcy. After realizing that drugs were taking over his life, Waylon began his recovery attempt. From the 1980's to the 1990's, Jennings remained free from cocaine and continued recording. His speed of recording albums was grueling but lucrative. Amongst others, releases such as 'The Ramblin' Man', 'This Time', and 'Dreaming My Dreams' proved to be extremely popular. Waylon Jennings died on February 13, 2002. Besides his acclaimed albums, he was also known as the voice of the narrator from the series 'Dukes of Hazzard' and its predecessor 'Moonrunners'. With over 65 solo albums recorded, and another 15 albums in collaboration with Nelson, Kristofferson, and Cash, and several awards to his name, Waylon Jennings is and will remain truly a country music legend.
