The acrosonic piano is popularly known as the 'Baldwin piano'. Baldwin is a company based in Ohio and manufactures keyboard instruments, especially the piano. The company was established in 1862 by a reed organ and a violin teacher, Dwight Hamilton Baldwin. As the company grew in the next quarter century, Baldwin realized that piano retailing had growth opportunities and hence, he decided to make 'the best piano that could be built'. In the year 1891, the first upright piano manufactured by Baldwin was available in the United States. Four years later, the company introduced its first grand piano. This piano was a 5'4' model. Baldwin won quite a few awards at key expositions and, thus, his reputation was built worldwide. Baldwin also won an award with the Grand Prix at the 1900 International Exhibition. In 1913, Baldwin started exporting its piano to 32 countries worldwide. Several other branches of Baldwin's company were opened in the United States. Many artists chose the Baldwin Grand for their concerts. The list of artists included pianist Jos'© Iturbi, Wilhelm Bachaus and Walter Gieseking and composers such as Bela Bartok, Ottotrino Respighi, and Igor Stravinsky. The Baldwin Grand was also chosen for radio broadcasting. In the year 1965, Baldwin introduced a new piano called SD10, which a popular piano of its time. The Baldwin's 41-ply maple piano pinblock was based on lessons learned in the construction of multi-ply aircraft wings. This piano is used till today because it has tuning stability and strength. Today, Baldwin offers acoustic pianos bearing the Baldwin, Chickering and Wurlitzer brand name. |
