Manufactured by Gibson, the Gibson Les Paul is one of the most widely known electric guitars. This signature model features solid-body construction and was first introduced in 1952. Since that date, the design of the Gibson Les Paul has been left practically unchanged. The design of this guitar is the result of the joint efforts of Gibson and Les Paul. Les Paul was a pop star as well a jazz guitarist. He is even credited with being an inventor. The original Les Paul guitar was very heavy, weighing in at around nine pounds. It was also very expensive. However, the guitar is said to have boasted a tone that was undeniably smooth and rich. Over the years, there have been numerous variations of the original Les Paul. Today, there is a seemingly endless selection of variants. The original model did not have a serial number and some individuals view the 1952 model as a prototype. Older models of the Les Paul guitars have captured quite a bit of collector interest. In fact, some versions dated in the '50s are capable of garnering prices upwards of $100,000. There have been many famous players of the Gibson Les Paul. Such famous names include Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Neil Young, and Buzz Osborne.
