About Kimball Piano

Although Kimball stopped producing musical instruments in 1996, the legacy of Kimball pianos lives on. The first Kimball pianos were produced under the name Kemble Pianos & Organs in 1857. The company was founded by William Wallace Kimball and was based in Chicago, Illinois. Later, the name was changed to the W.W. Kimball Company. In 1959, the piano company was acquired by the Jasper Corporation, which later changed its name to Kimball International in 1974. And so, in the mysterious way of corporate mergers and acquisitions, Kimball no longer produces pianos yet the name of piano maker William Wallace Kimball lives on. The current Kimball International manufactures furniture for homes and offices. At the peak of their piano production, Kimball manufactured 150 organs and 250 pianos every day. Their slogan was 'Music for the Millions.' The transition from piano maker to furniture manufacturer was relatively direct, since both industries require large supplies of wood. The current Kimball International maintains and regenerates an impressive 25,000 acres of U.S. timberlands forest. As you might expect from a company that made pianos and organs for nearly 150 years, Kimball pianos range dramatically in style. Many of their instruments have catchy names, like the Whitney upright piano, Xanadu organ, Fascination organ, and the Electramatic player organ. Kimball produced grand pianos in addition to its organs, uprights, and spinets. Kimball also produced sheet music, piano rolls, and piano learning books.
