Books are a collection sheets of papers with written or printed text bound together on one edge within covers. There are many types of books being printed today, in different sizes, with different quality, in different colors etc, and it is a little difficult to stack these books vertically in a row without bookends.
A bookend is an object that is designed to support the books placed upright vertically in a row; these are placed at each end of the row in a book case or a book shelf. They came into existence somewhere near renaissance; they prevent the books from slanting to one side. They are used in libraries, publishing houses and also used personally by some individuals. Usually they are made up of bronze, brass, wood, now a days there are bookends made up of china clay with different designs and shapes such as dogs, cats, dolls etc.
Many readers have a huge collection of books out of which few of them are antique ones, and to match their collection of antique books they prefer antique bookends which are usually made up wood or metal such as silver, brass, cast iron etc. These come in a set of two either in same design or each with different design. They are easily available at any antique shops and also on the internet. These pair of antiques enhances the beauty of the book shelf giving it a different, attractive and a rich look. They are rare in number however more valuable because of their rarity. |
