Egyptian gods have long been a topic of interest for many people. Some collect statues of the Egyptian gods not only because they find them beautiful, but because of the stories behind them. The ancient Egyptians worshipped a variety of different gods, each representing unique traits and elements. Unlike many ancient cultures, however, all Egyptians worshipped different gods, depending on their own personal beliefs. This being true, there were still some Egyptian gods who were universally loved and worshipped throughout Egypt. One such god was Osiris, who was thought to rule over the Duat, which was the Egyptian underworld. The ancient Egyptians believed that upon their death, Osiris would be waiting in judgement for them in the underworld. He would then determine whether or not they were worthy of eternal rest. Osiris was often depicted as green-skinned man dressed as a pharaoh. Osiris's wife, Isis, is thought to be the oldest Egyptian god. Isis may have also been the most important, as she was worshiped by almost all ancient Egyptians. Shrines to Isis can still be found today, as can people who still worship this ancient god. Representative of the mother-goddess, Isis is often depicted with her son, Horus. Often, she is shown wearing horns and a solar disc on top of her head. Another famous Egyptian god was Anubis. Anubis was the god of the dead before Osiris took over the position. Anubis than became the conductor of souls throughout the underworld. Anubis is very well-recognized as being the god with the head of a jackal. His black appearance was representative of his position as god of the dead. |
