Collectible books represent a passion for some, a business for others, and a wonder to all. From classic first editions of some of the most famous titles in the world, like Moby Dick and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, to limited editions from famous authors like T.S. Eliot, to art books printed with remarkable delicacy, collectible books are a link to our cultural past and are celebrated as some of the greatest achievements in history. Like paintings and jewelry, collectible books can often fetch high prices, and many will appear at auction. At times, collectors will purchase entire private libraries in an effort to snap up a cache of collectible books at once. The prices for these items are whatever the market will bear, and different times will see rises and falls in the value of books. Collectible books will rarely be read. The potential damage to the volume is not worth the risk. Instead, they will be preserved behind glass, preferably in climate controlled conditions. Paper is delicate and will deteriorate over time. In this way, collectible books are treated more as objects than books themselves. Understanding the world of collectible books is not always easy, though ironically, many people may have collectible books without even knowing it. This is especially true of the elderly, who may have unwittingly purchased a first edition of a novel years ago and forgotten all about. And needless to say, some of today's books will become tomorrow's collectibles. |
