Air compressors and air compressor pumps top the list of handy gadgets found in a woodshed, machine shop, or factory. On a larger scale, full-size air compressors are powered by electric motors or diesel engines. Industrial use compressors are designed with strict environmental standards in mind, keeping pollution and fuel waste to a minimum. Air compressors may be used as both coolers and dryers. You will need to decide whether you need a single-stage or two-stage air compressor. The storage and pressure capacity of a two-stage air compressor is greater. These compressors tend to last longer as well, since less heat is generated and the machine wears out less quickly. Two-stage air compressors are commonly found in industrial and automotive settings. A portable air compressor is a handy addition for home use as well. If you are a frequent commuter or travel by car as a part of your job, a portable air compressor can help you through many roadside emergencies. Portable air compressors with a 12 v pump can be stored in the trunk and will usually do the job of inflating passenger car and boat trailer tires to around 30 psi in minutes. This should be enough to get you where you are going, or at least to the next service station where more comprehensive services can be purchased. Most portable models can simply be connected to the cigarette lighter socket or any other power port in your vehicle. On the other hand, if you need more pressure to inflate truck or trailer tires to over 60 psi, a portable pump would be inadequate. For this purpose, a two or three horsepower/110 or 120 vac compressor pump would be much more effective. The stronger the compressor, the faster it will inflate big tires. Most of these compressors will be heavy and bulky, and some of them may also require a power generator. |
