Anyone employed in the medical field is aware of the amount of medical equipment necessary for diagnosing and treating illnesses. Whether you are a doctor, nurse, dentist or optometrist, you will need a variety of medical equipment to properly diagnose patients. These tools include sterilization equipment, endoscopy, fluid administration and monitoring devices. An endoscope is a small, flexible tube that is inserted through the mouth and used to view the inside of the digestive and intestinal system. After being guided through the patient's system, a light at the end of the tube allows the physician to view the internal organs, take photographs and take tissue samples from the body for further testing. A colonoscopy is one example of this procedure. X-rays are used in virtually all medical environments to help diagnose internal problems. After passing high-energy radiation through the body, images are cast onto a special sheet that shows an image of the body's structures. The images produced by x-rays are used to diagnose bone disorders, tissue damage and tooth health. By performing an x-ray, diagnosis can be made fairly quickly, without having to perform invasive procedures. An ultrasound is another noninvasive technique used to view the internal structures of the body. Different than x-rays, ultrasound medical equipment uses high-frequency sound waves that bounce off structures and display images directly onto a video screen for the technician to view. Ultrasounds are commonly used during pregnancies to check fetal health and to determine the baby's gender.
