Pipe fittings refer to the many components that connect pipe ends. The cross-sections of the fittings are often circular to attach to the pipe sections that they are making connections with. They are used in a variety of pressurized and non-pressurized applications, such as vent systems, waste and drainage. Pipe fittings are made from a variety of different materials, including brass, copper, steel, PVC and plastic. The material used in the pipe fittings is dependent on the type of liquid or solid material that is being transported throughout the pipes. A few common types of fittings include adapters, caps, 90 degree elbows, expansion joints, plugs and side outlet elbows. When fitting pipes, you'll need pipe threads to fasten the pipe fittings. There are a few different types of pipe threads, which include jointing threads and fastening threads. The jointing threads are made to create a pressure tight seal on the joints, and is made even more secure with jointing compound. The fastening threads are threads where there are no pressure-tight joints. Rather, both of the threads are parallel and sealing is made by compressing a soft material onto the external thread. When pipefitting, it is very important to ensure a tight seal to resist leakage. Over time however, pipe threads can become damaged and leak, especially after consistent use and repair. This is a common problem that remains even after enacting standards to maintain uniform fittings. |
