The Sony DCR DVD 403 compares very favorably to other Handycams in its class, particularly the Optura 500. Features include rich Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, great image quality, and direct to player playback. Although this handycam doesn't let you edit the video you shoot, what it lacks in recording options, it makes up in ease-of-use. Indeed, reviewer after reviewer suggests that this Sony minicam is wonderful for home movie-making. The camera can take still pictures with its three megapixel CCD sensor. These pictures are fairly high-quality, but if you really want excellent digital stills, you should buy a true digital camera, especially since the stills that you take on the 403 will eat up memory that you could use for more video footage. That said, for an "all in one" package, this dual camera / video feature is pretty convenient. One major complaint is that the Sony DCR DVD 403 doesn't have much microphone protection. Thus, if you're in an area that's even slightly breezy, the sound will likely be drowned out or at least impeded significantly. You may be able to purchase an accessory directional microphone. Some home users have even attempted ad hoc repair by taping Styrofoam over the unidirectional mic on the camera. As far as handycams go, this Sony unit is simple enough for small children to use without referring to a manual. Its intuitive grip, ergonomic heft, and durability will surely make it a classic--it will no doubt film many American vacations to come.
