The foundations of Nokia go back to 1865 with the establishment of a forest industry enterprise in Finland by a mining engineer, Fredrick Idestam. In 1898, Finnish Rubber Works was founded and in 1912, Finnish Cable Works was established. In 1967, the three companies were merged to form the Nokia Corporation. By the late 1980s, Nokia was the world’s second largest IT Company. Today, it is the world’s biggest mobile phone manufacturer for protocols including GSM, CDMA, and W-CDMA. It is the largest Finnish company as well, holding about half of the market capitalization of the Helsinki Stock Exchange. Nokia also produces network equipment in telecommunications for applications including mobile and fixed-line telephony, ISDN, broadband, VoIP, and wireless LAN.
Nokia first made mobile phones for the Finnish Defence forces, for force field radios, in 1972. In 1987, it made the world’s first NMT phone: The Nokia Cityman. Nokia played a major role in developing the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). The world’s first GSM call was made by the Prime Minister of Finland, Harri Holkeri, in 1991, in Helsinki. He spoke over a Nokia-supplied network, using a Nokia phone.
The Nokia 3155 has a 256K color display and a folding design. It has dual display including a big 128 x 160 pixel primary screen.
