It's not often that when speaking about a cell phone, the conversation is dominated by the its design and the thought and care that went into crafting it. That, however, is often the case with Nokia's 8800 phone. The guiding principle of Nokia's designers was to make a truly modern, and truly beautiful, mobile phone. On both counts, it may be argued, Nokia has succeeded stunningly. In the making and design of the 8800, Nokia used modern watchmaking and jewelry techniques. The 8800 is enclosed in a slim stainless steel body with modern lines and organic curves. The goal was to balance the twin aims of form and function. Among the watchmaking techniques employed was the use of metal injection molding on the function keys. Specially reinforced glass was used on the display to help prevent scratching. On top of this, the audio accompaniment, including all ringtones and alerts, is by award-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. The phone's features live up to the elegant casing. The user gently slides the phone open to reveal the large 262,144 color, 208 by 208 pixel screen. The phone features a hands-free speakerphone and it's also Bluetooth-enabled, so a wireless headset can be used as well. There is also a camera which captures both stills and videos, a phonebook, music player, and more. For users who want a phone that can attract attention and be the center of conversation, the 8800 is a viable option. |
