DKNY, also known as Donna Karan New York, is a world-renowned women's fashion company. Donna Karan herself grew up in the town of Forest Hills, New York and went to school at the Parsons School of Design. Her parents were heavily involved in fashion. During her sophomore year at Parsons, Karan was hired by the esteemed New York Designer Anne Klein. In 1968, still without a degree, Karan went back to work for Klein and soon became one of the most preeminent designers for her company. In 1997, she won the prestigious COTY Award together with one of her close friends, a man named Louis Dell'Olio. Several years later, Karen teamed up with Dell'Olio to start up her own line, DKNY. Throughout her career, Karan has developed suits, accessories, and wardrobes for women that accent sensuality without descending into the racy. Simple lines, luxurious fabrics, and highly structured tailoring are all hallmarks of DKNY clothing. Karan's notion was to craft wardrobe lines that women on-the-go could wear. Items like dresses, sarongs, blazers and warm New York City style coats have all sold well. DKNY supports a number of lines including DKNY Essentials, DKNY Tech, and DKNY Jeans. Karan herself has received numerous awards, including honors from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, awards from the Fashion Group, and an honorary degree from her old school, the Parsons School of Design, which she belatedly accepted in May of 1987. |
