The 60s saw the emergence of mini skirts and they have been one of the favorite outfits for women everywhere ever since. Sociologically, the introduction of mini skirts has been linked to the discovery of pills – symbolically representing the sexual liberation of women. The credit for designing the mini skirt for the first time is controversially shared by Mary Quant and Andre Courrèges. Come summer, and ladies young and old can be seen sporting mini skirts. Denim skirts are a rage – available in different colors, patterns and designs. The best part of a mini skirt, especially denim is that, anybody – young or old, fat or thin, tall or short – can carry it off well. From prepubescent girls to the elderly (but young at heart), mini skirts are a mainstay in all wardrobes.
Over time, mini skirts have also made a statement as formal attire. It is not an unusual sight to see women wear mini skirts to work. When accompanied with a formal or semi-formal top, the mini looks polished enough to be worn formally. Mini skirts have also made a foray into party wear through latex and several synthetic materials. Leather and suede skirts also make for excellent evening wear or party wear. Miniskirts had created such a prominent fashion statement, that in 1968, Jackie Kennedy wore a mini-skirt designed by Valentino for her wedding. Available in different styles and patterns, mini skirts can be designed as a wrap around, with a front slit, side slits, back slit, plain body hugging, frilled umbrella fitting or A-lined. Mini skirts have also created somewhat of a revolution in professional sports, with women’s tennis and golf players choosing to sport minis in professional competition. In tennis, they have almost completely replaced traditional shorts. Not only are they more comfortable, they add a touch of style and sex appeal that has long been missing from the sport.
The mini-skirt is a vital component of every woman’s wardrobe. Its popularity is at an all-time high and there seems to be no let-up in sight. With more and more brands entering the race, one can expect even more designs, patterns and trends, spoiling the fashion conscious for choice. |
