The Nautica Design Company first opened its doors for business in 1983. Founder David Chu believed in creating complete lifestyle accessories for both men and women. Over the years, the Nautica line has grown to include swimwear, eyewear, sportswear, and a host of fragrances. There are also tailored Nautica products, accessories for boys, watches, and jeans. Part of the Nautica appeal is that the outerwear firm stocks generous supplies of high-end brands, such as GANT USA and Ralph Lauren's Polo. Nautica has seen so much success over the past decade and half that some mavens now consider it a new American classic. Although many of the items marketed by the store are considered up-market, the brand does sell value clothes. The Nautica brand aspires to create spirited clothes and fun retail experiences. Recently, the brand was bought by an international conglomerate known as the VF Corporation. Nautica remains a popular outlet chain in both suburban mall locations and in less consumer oriented arenas. In many ways, Nautica's transformation from a niche brand into a comprehensive clothing merchandiser mirrors Gap's re-branding of Banana Republic from a niche safari oriented boutique into a upscale retailer. Part of the reason for Nautica's success is that the company manufactures high-quality products which can withstand vigorous use. In particular, Nautica's sunglasses and outdoor accessories have earned loads of praise from consumer reviewers and industry evaluators alike. |
