Joseph Spiegel, a Civil War veteran, started a furniture retail shop in downtown Chicago in 1865 and named it Spiegel and Co. In 1905, Spiegel mailed its first 24-page booklet and mail order catalog to women throughout America. The following 20 years saw the customer base of the fashion and furniture retailer grow to 10 million. In 1943, Spiegel introduced its first phone order catalog to its customers. By the late 1970s, Spiegel transformed to meet the needs of businesswomen, continuing the tradition 100 years later.
