CB stands for Citizen's Band radio. One does not need a license to operate and communicate via CB radio. Though primarily used by individuals, commercial communication can also take place via CB. CB radio is widely used among those who make their living on the road. Of the 40 channels available for communication, Channel 19 is widely regarded as the "unofficial truckers' network." Channel 9 is recognized as the official "emergency" channel. Speaking of emergencies, CB radios are considered an important part of a home's "emergency" kit. After a natural disaster such as an earthquake, landline telephones are frequently out of service for a variety of reasons. Many cell phones went out of service in the immediate minutes and hours following the attack on the World Trade Center in New York. Many people feel that having a CB radio in the home or car is just good sense. When investigating the purchase of a CB radio, remember that experts agree that an average CB radio partnered with a top of the line antenna is a better deal than a top of the line radio with a subpar antenna. Similarly, it's not advised to buy "more radio" than you need. CBs are available for dashboard mount, as well as tabletop and handheld usage. |
