Norelco is an American brand name for electric shavers and other personal care products made by Philips’s Personal day care unit. This name is derived by combing the first few initials of the words “north”, “Company” and “electrical” from The North American Philips Company. Their first electric shaver was introduced in the year 1939 under the Philishave trademark. Philips used the name Norelco because Philco (Philadelphia Electric Company, a Pioneer in manufacturing of iconic radios and T.V sets acquired by Philips in 1981) was able to prevent Philips legally from using their name because the two names sounded similar. Philips started branding their shavers under the brand name “Philips Norelco” in the year 2005, to improve their brand recognition in USA.
