If you've spent hours, days, or even weeks searching for the perfect subwoofer, you may feel that your job is over once you've chosen. Perhaps you feel the task of choosing a box should be both quick and easy. However it is important to put the same energy into selecting a subwoofer box as you exert for choosing a sub. Why? Basically, a subwoofer needs a good enclosure or box to produce optimum sound. As such, the box you choose is nearly as important as the subwoofer itself. When the time comes to select a subwoofer box, you'll need to decide between purchasing a pre-made box and designing your own. Some people find building subwoofer boxes fun and rewarding. However, doing so may be difficult for novices. If you don't have a genuine enthusiasm for formula volumes and the like, you may prefer to simply order a professionally-made sub box. Many companies that sell audio equipment also sell subwoofer boxes. There are a variety of subwoofer box styles from which to choose. These include sealed, bandpass, and ported varieties. Of the types available, the sealed boxes are most commonly used. Sealed boxes are considered easy to install and are reputed to offer good performance with just about any driver. However, using a box that is too small can cause your system's output level to be less than optimal. The performance of your deep bass may be impaired as well. Also, sealed box subwoofers are considered less efficient than the vented type. Many suggest that the best performance may be obtained by using a vented box. These boxes are often referred to as ported or bass-reflex boxes. These systems use ducts to bring about optimal driver performance.
