Founded in 1976, VTech is one of the world's largest suppliers of corded and cordless telephones and electronic learning equipment. Their first product was a portable electronic game that worked on a single chip microprocessor; they soon diversified to create a range of export and design award winning electronic learning products. 1984 witnessed the introduction of VTech’s first self designed satellite receiver.
By 1991, the Group designed a new series of high frequency cordless telephones that utilized microwave technology; they called it the 900MHz cordless phone. Thereafter, VTech has launched new and improved versions of the same phone. By 1999, they introduced a new product, a portable e-mail appliance. With these user-friendly gadgets, users can send, and retrieve e-mail at the touch of a button, without utilizing a computer.
VTech has legal agreements with children’s entertainment corporations such as Warner Brothers, Brainy Baby, American Greetings, Disney, and Marvel. This agreement allows VTech to use cartoon characters, which have been patented by the above corporations, on their electronic learning systems. The most recent example of these systems is the television learning system, V.Smile. This system is for children aged 3 to 7; it combines popular cartoon characters with educational content and a video game platform, and connects to a television set.
VTech was awarded Vendor of the Year 2005 by Toys "R" Us, Toy Supplier of the Year 2005 by the Toy Retailers Association, the Innovation Award 2006 for their TV Learning System, and a Gold Award for Electronic & Electrical Appliance at the Hong Kong Designers Association Awards 05. VTech’s mission statement is “to be the most cost effective designer and manufacturer of innovative, high quality consumer electronics products and to distribute them to markets worldwide in the most efficient manner.” |
