The first of the Wheelock mills were opened in Massachusetts. Six generations before Warren Wheelock, they were then known as Stanley Woolen Mills. The mills were eventually sold to manufacturers like Perry Ellis, Evan Picone, Brooks Brothers and Hager. In 1968, a new hand-knitting subsidiary called Stanley Berroco was formed with the amalgamation of three business associates. They soon became one of the largest importers and wholesalers of yarn in the country.
Berroco imports yarn from all over the world including countries like the UK, Germany, Italy, Brazil and Japan. The varieties available are innumerable with different names like Boho - matte and shine finish in a single yarn, Boho Colors - multicolored yarn, Calico - contrasting shades in a single yarn, Icon - metallic coated tape, Idol - colorful tricot with gold chainette, Suede Deluxe - suede with metallic finish, Touché - half-cotton, half-Modal rayon, Ultra Silk - hosiery-like tube of silk and rayon, and Yoga - space-dyed nylon ribbon with metallic bands. Besides these products, Berroco also sell books on hand knitting and patterns. These yarn and patterns have been featured in many magazines like Knitters, Knitting Digest, Woman’s Day and McCall’s.
To complete their offerings, they also distribute top-quality Inox and Clover knitting needles. In 1992, they became the master distributor of the Handeze ‘Massage’ Glove. These gloves provide heat, support and massage to the hands while knitting. |
