Most upholstery sewing machines look very similar to industrial sewing machines. Actually, if you do not see a label or title on the upholstery machines, it can be difficult to tell them apart unless you are a seasoned upholstery sewer. Some sewing machines also are designed to handle the heavier and thicker upholstery fabrics. However, you will usually need to change the smaller, standard sewing needle to a bigger upholstery one. It is not recommended to attempt sewing heavy upholstery fabrics on a normal portable sewing machine unless the machine is specifically designed to handle it. Otherwise you will experience problems such as fabric, bobbin and thread jams and broken needles, because the tension will be difficult to adjust accordingly. You can seriously damage your sewing machine in this way. It is better to go ahead and invest in an upholstery sewing machine. There are numerous types and styles in various sizes and you can find both computerized and manual upholstery sewing machines. Some upholstery sewing machines will vary on what kind of stitching you can do with them as well. For example, you will find machines that are for straight stitching and others that will allow zig-zag or other types of stitches. The presser foot functions may also vary depending on the machine that you purchase. Some upholsters prefer machines with automatic fabric feeding systems for the best results. Upholstery machines generally have more than one foot to allow you to sew over various thickness depths in the material. Depending on the upholstery sewing machine, you should be able to sew materials such as leather, tarps, canvas, burlap, cushioned or patted fabric and much more. |
