”Edward Scissorhands”, directed by Tim Burton and written by Caroline Thompson, is a modern-day fairytale movie. It was released in 1990 and stars Johnny Depp, Dianne Wiest, and Winona Ryder.
The story of Edward Scissorhands reminds one of Mary Shelley’s novel “Frankenstein”. The story revolves around Edward, an artificial man whose inventor passes away before equipping his creation with hands. Now, Edward has long metal scissor like blades instead of hands. When Pegg Bogs, the local Avon lady, makes a visit to the castle on the hill, she meets Edward and brings him to her home. Edward must now adjust to life in suburbs.
Initially, Edward makes a good impression with his talent in cutting hair and hedges. He then falls in love with Mrs Boggs’ high school daughter, Kim. The girl, who is scared of Edward at first, falls in love with him later when everybody else disbelieves him because of his scissor-like hands. At the end, Edward and Kim part ways, but the love between them prevails. The story of “Edward Scissorhands” is told by an aged Kim Boggs to her grand daughter.
The movie, “Edward Scissorhands”, won many accolades for its story and direction. It was also nominated at the Oscars for Best Make-Up, the Saturn award for Best Fantasy film, a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor (Johnny Depp), the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic presentation, and a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental composition. |
