Baywatch was an American television series that revolved around the Los Angeles County Lifeguards, who keep a watch on the crowded beaches of Los Angeles County, California. It was first aired on NBC in 1989; however it was terminated after just one season due to the high production cost and low ratings. In the year 1991, the series was revived by David Hasselhoff, one of the leading cast members of Baywatch. He took up the responsibility of executive producer. The show was a huge success internationally and it led to the sequel Baywatch Nights and a reunion movie, Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding.
Baywatch featured a group of lifeguards on duty, saving people from drowning, shark attacks, serial killers, or even earthquakes. The show also focused on their interpersonal relationships. The show was famous for the California beach lifestyle and portrayal of dangerous beach activities. Another popular aspect of the show was of the shots of the lifeguards running in slow motion, which was the trademark of the show. Apart from David Hasselhoff, other important cast members included Michael Newman, Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Alexandra Paul, and David Charvet. A lot of actors were cast to play different roles in the show for few seasons. These actors who achieved fame, due to the show are Carmen Electra, Traci Bingham, Donna D’Errico, Nicole Eggert, David Chokachi, Gena Lee Nolin, Jasson Simmons, and Kelly Slater.
The show ended in the year of 2000 and continues to remain popular. It airs in as many as 140 countries around the world. DVDs of the serial have also been released. Dreamworks has decided to make Baywatch into a movie, which would be released in the year 2006. |
