| Set in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, Gilmore Girls is a television series that’s been on the air since 2000. The plot of this series revolves around Lorelai Victoria Gilmore, played by Lauren Graham, and her daughter Lorelai "Rory" Leigh Gilmore, played by Alexis Bledel. Other characters in this series include Luke Danes, who plays Lorelai’s romantic interest and owns a diner which Lorelai and Rory frequent, Sookie, a lovable and kind-hearted chef, Kim Lane, Rory’s best friend who is in constant fear of her conservative parents, and Emily Gilmore, Lorelai’s hard to please mother.
Lorelai’s character is a single mother who was raised by rich parents in a well to do society. Though her parents tried to raise her as an ‘acceptable by society’ girl, she eventually turned rebellious and became pregnant at the age of 16; she refused to marry the father. After giving birth to Rory, Lorelai stayed with her parents for a year before running away. She started working as a waitress at a local inn to support herself and Rory, and kept all contact with her mother to a minimum. During the pilot show, Rory is shown as being accepted into an elite prep school in Hartford, Connecticut. Lorelai knows she cannot afford the school’s fees so she asks her parents for a loan. Her parents agree to lend her the money on the condition that she and Rory visit them for dinner every Friday.
After a humble beginning, Gilmore Girls soon become popular among television viewers and gained a massive fan following. The show’s characters have received critical acclaim for their performances. Lauren Graham (Lorelai) has won two Family Television Awards and a Teen Choice Award for Best TV Mom; she’s been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series and two consecutive nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series from the Screen Actors Guild.
