Born in Bath, Somerset, England, Indira Varma gets her Indian heritage from her father and a Swiss one from her mother. She underwent training at the Academy of Dramatic Art from 1992 to 1995.
Indira Varma has done a number of TV shows and movies, but she personally prefers the theatre. Some of the TV shows in which she acted are ‘Psychos’ (1999) as Dr. Martine Nichol, ‘Zehn wahnsinnige Tage’ (2000) a German TV show as Ra, ‘Canterbury Tales’ (2003) as Meena, and in ‘DoNovAn ‘(2004) as Cara Mathis. She received recognition for her role as Sasha in ‘Attachments’ and the as Niobe in ‘Rome’ on HBO.
Along side movies, Indira Varma has also appeared on the silver screen. She has played the role of ‘Maya’ in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996); that is set in 16th century India and is directed by Mira Nair. Maya and Tara are two girls that are raised together even though they are from different social backgrounds. But Maya is treated as Tara’s servant. She takes revenge by seducing Tara’s husband. The movie won the Independent Spirit Award in 1998. Indira Varma, has also acted as ‘Kitty’ in Clancy’s Kitchen (1996), as Amy in ‘Sixth Happiness’ (1997), as Ruttie Jinnah in the 1998 film ‘Jinnah’ and as Narendra in ‘Mad Dogs’ (2002). She played the role of Kiran Bingley in ‘Bride & Prejudice’ (2004) directed by Gurinder Chadha. |
