Fence posts are used to support the fence. When deciding which type of post to use, it is important to consider the type of fence being built. A plastic post wouldn't be strong enough to hold a metal fence, or one being constructed from a heavy hardwood. Some of the top choices available include plastic, metal, and wood. In general, plastic posts are appropriate for light jobs, such as holding up a picket fence, while metal would be used for chain link and plastic fences. Installing a fence post can be challenging for a few reasons. First, the posts need to be evenly spaced, so it is important to measure accurately. Another common problem comes with digging the hole. If concrete is being used to support the fence posts, it is crucial that the hole is even. In most cases, the top of the hole is wider than the bottom. Although this may not seem like a problem, if the winter months bring frost, the fence can be lifted out of the ground. To prevent this, only fill the hole up halfway with cement, and cover the rest with soil. This prevents the cement from being forced from the ground. Concrete isn't always necessary for the installation of fence posts. Other options include burying the posts in the ground, using a spiked post and driving it into the ground, or attaching it to a wall. Keep in mind, though, that the latter method can only be used on the end posts. |
