Granite is a naturally occurring igneous rock in the form of huge boulders, massifs or depressions in hilly regions. They are crystalline in nature and occur in white, pink, gray, brown and black colors. Granites are volcanic rocks that develop over many years, being subject to tremendous pressure and heat. Quarries do the job of chipping granite crystals and making huge slabs out of the rocks. These slabs then go through the process of polishing, before being cut into smaller tiles, which are further used for construction works.
Granites are used extensively for household purposes, light commercial purposes as well heavy industrial use. They are used widely for flooring purposes; this is because granite being very sturdy, can withstand heavy foot traffic. Granites are also preferred for the kitchens, since kitchen floorings are subjected to different kinds of solid and liquids, spilling on them. Today granite has replaced marble constructions, as marble is prone to corrosion by acid rains, resulting in the building structure getting weakened. Granite on the other hand, being one of the hardest substances, is long-lasting and extremely durable. A processed type of floor tile is the Marbonite, which resembles a marble, and is as durable as granite.
Apart from resilience and durability, granites have elegant appearances. Granite tiles, are available in a wide range of patterns, designs and colors. Their crystalline nature gives a natural sheen to the flooring, only to enhance the décor and aura of the room. Not just contemporary, granites have been in use since centuries; most of the pyramids in Egypt are constructed by huge granite slabs. |
