A laser level is a combination of a spirit level and pendulum with a laser used to define a leveled line on a surface. A spirit level is a traditional carpenter's tool that uses a bubble in a tube of liquid to define a level plane. When the bubble is in the center of the defined markers, the line or item is considered level. The addition of the laser makes it possible to indicate a line along a wall or other surface for great distances. Use of a laser level is common in occupations such as cabinetry, construction, and surveying where leveling is crucial to the end result. For instance, in surveying, a tripod is used to give the laser level a sturdy base. The level is then spun to indicate a horizontal plane. A sensor detects when the laser beam comes into contact with the terrain, giving clear definition to the area. Construction crews use laser levels in various projects. For example, in carpentry, the laser level can provide a quick line around the room for installing cabinets, countertops, trim, and millwork. Electricians use a laser level to indicate the line so all electrical outlets in the room are installed at the same distance from the floor. Plumbers use levels to make sure the plumbing is installed at the proper grade. Many other uses are common for a laser level including the installation of siding and setting the landscape grade. The light from the laser creates a visual line for various distances, depending on the strength of the laser. The laser level is a great timesaver over the traditional level.
