Judith “Jack” Halberstam is a professor of English and a well-known gender and bisexual theorist. She is Director of the Center for Feminist Research at the University of Southern California. Halberstam acquired her Ph.D in English Literature from the University of Minnesota, and has specialized in areas such as cultural studies, queer theories, Gothic Literature, modern novel, film and video, postmodern culture, feminist theory etc. Her works mainly focus on female masculinity.
Judith Halberstam wrote a book called “Female Masculinity”, which attracted a lot of controversy from various academic circles. She has also authored books such as “Skin Shows: Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters”, “The Drag King Book” etc. Judith’s work is seen as reinforcing and supporting heterosexuality. Some queer scholars also consider her work as highlighting the concept of “femaleness”. Judith Halberstam’s work in the queer theory is quite pioneering, and has the power to displace the roots of masculinity in the male domain. Her latest book, “In a Queer Time and Place: Transgender bodies, Subcultural Lives” throws light on queer subculture. Judith Halberstam has been awarded the Draper Postdoctoral Fellow, Liberal Studies in 1995-96, the Publisher’s Triangle Judy Grahn Award for Lesbian Non-Fiction for Female Masculinity in 1999, the USCD Humanities Center Fellowship award in 2001, among many others. She was recently awarded the UCHRI Seminar “Queen Locations”, Convener in 2004.
