Mini choppers were first built to be a cheaper version of custom-built motorcycles. Custom-built mini choppers cater to a wide range of riders. Starting from the age of 3, mini choppers are built for riders who are 16 and even above. Models built for the latter are usually 110 cc, 4-stroke, with a 5 h.p engine and can reach up to 55 mph.
Generally constructed from a one inch steel tubing or a ¾ inch steel black pipe, which are then bent and welded together to get the preferred angles and shapes of the main body or frame. The difference between a frame made from tubing and a frame made from a pipe may not be a big deal; however the method of rating is different. Similarly, according to the materials used to build the frame, different tools are required. Depending on the age of the rider, engines and transmissions are available. The most common engine used in mini chopper building is a Briggs & Stratton or a Tecumseh horizontal shaft engine with a non tapered shaft. Engines for younger children are also produced and are found in small motorcycles and in power-sport vehicles such as ATV (All Terrain Vehicles) and dirt bikes as well. Mini choppers usually use bicycle rims and tires since the sizes of the two components are similar to that of the mini choppers. As for the back tires, golf cart wheels are used.
With these 110cc mini choppers, rather than the speed or the mileage of the chopper, the design and the art done on these machines are what hold the appeal. With crazy frame designs and out of the box ideas, mini choppers always attract the attention of any passersby. |
