The Ducati 996 is the evolved version of the famous Ducati 916 models. Launched in October 1999, the 996 sports motorcycle was quite similar to its predecessors. The engine was an upgraded version of the familiar 4Valve Ducati “Pantah” engine, mainly designed by Fabio Taglioni, the chief designer since the 1970s. The 996 is known prominently for its excellent handling and the intelligent use of torque.
The original design, the Ducati 916, used a water-cooled engine derived from the earlier Ducati 888. The 888 engine was quite powerful by itself, further enhanced by the minor structural changes resulting in much higher performance. The Ducati 996 produced wonders out of the same basic engine, tweaked beyond capacity to achieve higher power outputs. The V2 4-stroke 16 valve engine with a displacement of 996 cc churned out almost 115 BHP @ 9250 RPM. It implemented an advanced Fuel Injection System and a 6 speed gearbox for producing 96 NM of torque at 7000 RPM.
It had a single-sided swingarm, essentially introduced to enable faster wheel changes during races. Additional changes were implemented to the chassis with the exhaust pipes placed under the seats for smoother aero-dynamics while racing, as well as to provide for a clean line look. Its signature five-spoke all aluminum wheels gave extreme stability and tighter cornering capabilities. The Ducati 996 fought its way towards victory in the 1999 World Superbike championships, driven by the one of the most successful Superbike racers, Carl Fogarty. |
